History: The citizens of Gbesseh, having realized that education is the key to success
and the bare rock for nation building, and leaving their children and the unborn uneducated
would create a vacuum where poverty and underdevelopment will be the order of the day; while
their children remain useless to their community, their county, and Liberia at large.
It was against these backgrounds the people of Gbesseh took the initiative to open a
school in a Palava hut on May 26, 1956, as a self-help project - erecting a school on the
very site where the school is now located. As the school developed, it was turned over to
the national government for further support.
The school gained its junior high school status in 1974 through the instrumentality of
Hon. Uranus B. Freeman, former Senator of Grand Cape Mount County.
At the end of the 14 years civil conflict in Liberia, the people of Ghesseh and some
concerned citizens of Lower Tewor advocated for a senior high school through Action Aid
Youth Program (YES) where two annexes were built to elevate the school to high school
status. At the completion of the two annexes in 2008, the community again imported some
teachers from Sierra Leone on the experience of the community and started with the first
tenth grade class. Since then, the school has had two graduations while the third is
pending.
